Body Found In Waitemata Harbour

North Shore Police have recovered the body of a female from Waitematä Harbour.

Police say the body was found at about 1000 hours on Sunday 12 September 2010. A man was paddling his board in Chelsea Bay when he saw the body of a female floating in the sea.

Chelsea Bay is situated between the Chelsea Sugar Refinery and the Birkenhead wharf. Public access in this area is via private property only. The Police Maritime Unit went to the location and recovered the body.

A post mortem has been carried out this morning and police investigations are focused on identifying the body of the deceased. A search of missing persons files is in progress

Police say two items of distinctive jewellery may assist establish identification. One is a ring on the right hand ring finger. The second item is a small silver cross on a chain being worn around the neck.

Anyone who may have information that can identify the deceased female is urged to call the North Shore CIB on 09 477 5000 immediately.
