Candidate calls for change to Wellington Parking
Council Candidate calls for change to Wellington’s Parking System
Labour’s Lambton Ward Candidate Marcus Ganley today called for an end to the outsourcing of parking enforcement in Wellington.
“Wellington Council currently contracts parking management to Tenix which in turn contracts out the ticketing work to Parkwise, a subsidiary of Armourguard. Parkwise offers wardens incentives including iPods and holidays to meet ticket quotas.”
“While we need to have rules to make sure parking spaces are used fairly, the current system seems to focus on maximising revenue rather than managing the sharing of parking spaces.”
“On Friday morning, at 8am I saw a car ticketed on Dixon Street while the driver had pulled into a car park and was taking a phone call before paying for her park. The driver was in the vehicle. There were plenty of empty parks either side. There was no reason to ticket the driver except to meet a quota.”
“Time has come to reconsider whether we should be contracting out our parking management or whether we would be better off having council staff employed to make sure the rules were being followed, but with a focus on discretion and commonsense rather than meeting ticket quotas,” Marcus Ganley said.
