World Famous Eden Park Goal Posts For Sale

World Famous Eden Park Goal Posts For Sale

Slice of Eden Park history up for grabs as first ever Rugby World Cup goal posts auctioned for charity

19 September 2010, Auckland N.Z – Rugby fans and sports collectors alike will be vying to snatch a piece of New Zealand sporting history next week as Eden Park’s famous goal posts go up for auction on Trade Me.

The towering 18 metre steel posts have been seen in hundreds of millions of living rooms over the years including New Zealand’s victory in the first ever, Rugby World Cup in 1987.

“If these goalposts could talk, they’d certainly tell a great story,” says David Kennedy, Eden Park Trust Chief Executive.

“From being there during Michael Jones’ diving try in the ’87 World Cup final, to the drama and controversy of the final test against the Springboks in 1981, the goalposts have stood through some momentous events for Eden Park,” Mr Kennedy says.

The auction is live on Trade Me from Wednesday 22 September and will close at 8.00pm on Sunday, 3 October. All proceeds from the online auction will go to the Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund.

With a newer, lighter set of goals on the way for the Rugby World Cup 2011, The Eden Park Trust is selling the goals as part of the build up to its official re-opening and Charity Public Open Day on 10 October, where all the proceeds raised will be gifted to a range of local and national charities.

Weighing in at 700kgs apiece, the goals can be disassembled for transport, and the purchasers will need to collect them from the Park.

Former All Black and Auckland Rugby goal-kicker Grant Fox says the posts hold a lot of memories for him, having spent countless hours at Eden Park trying to kick a ball between them.

“This is a fitting send off for the goal posts, and the proceeds are going to a great cause. Unfortunately I won’t be putting in a bid myself because I don’t think the neighbours would appreciate them on the front lawn.”

David Kennedy says the goals are definitely able to be re-used on a sports field or would be ideal for a rugby club, collectors of memorabilia, or just a group of mates who want the real thing on their local field.
