Wander Wellington and be in to win

MEDIA RELEASE FROM GREATER WELLINGTON REGIONAL COUNCIL

Dust off your walking shoes and break out the sun block on Sunday 10 October for a fun wander around Wellington city to discover some of the city’s best walking shortcuts.

Somewhere between a treasure hunt and an orienteering challenge, the Wellington Wander - a free event - is part of 10/10/10, a day to celebrate individuals taking action on climate change. Participants in the Wellington Wander will follow a set route and answer a series of questions along the way.

Susan Hutchinson-Daniel, Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Sustainable Projects Coordinator, says people can expect to discover parts of Wellington they never knew existed. “I can almost guarantee that some intriguing little byways and shortcuts on your Wellington Wander will come as a surprise.

“We can’t give away too many details but people need to know that the Wellington Wander includes steps so it’s not suitable for pushchairs or buggies. However, it’s fine for little people in backpacks or young children who can walk for a couple of hours.

“This is a fun challenge for all and a wonderful opportunity to take time out, get some exercise and explore Wellington.”

Participants who answer every question along the Wellington Wander can complete their entry online using Greater Wellington’s walking and cycling journey planner www.journeyplanner.org.nz

Everyone who completes an online entry automatically goes into a draw to win two Zealandia nocturnal tour passes, a $100 food hamper or a family pass to Wellington Zoo.

“Greater Wellington launched our journey planner about a year ago so now that our days are longer it’s time to re-familiarise yourself with the journey planner’s fantastic features. You can plan your walking and / or cycling journey online and the planner will tell you how hilly your trip will be, where water fountains and resting places are along the way, where your nearest bus stops and train stations are, and how many calories you’re likely to burn.”

People can register for and start the Wellington Wander at Waitangi Park, Wakefield Street, between 9am-10am on Sunday 10 October.
