Become a Civil Defence
volunteer
Recent events have demonstrated that we are not immune to disaster.
At times of civil emergency, volunteers are the life blood of Civil Defence.
The Christchurch City Council is holding civil defence training on 12 October, providing an introduction to civil defence and emergency management. This introduction will set the scene for trainee volunteers to gain skills that will help them tackle a range of possible emergencies and help support their community.
Jane Parfitt, City Environment General Manager says: “Volunteers are vital when an emergency happens, and have an important role in everything from rescue to welfare services. When people think of emergencies they may think of storms or floods, and now earthquakes, but many are completely unpredictable. Pandemics and tsunamis are also possible emergencies that may affect Christchurch, all are the reason why volunteers are crucial to support Christchurch’s people."
“In the training, volunteers can meet new people, learn some skills and have some fun. The training includes exercises, competitions and volunteers can even gain National Certificates,” Mrs Parfitt says.
