The Minister’s Son

The Minister’s Son

The Minister's Son, at Mangere Arts Centre – Ngā Tohu o Uenuku for the Manukau Festival of Arts, is an essential viewing for anyone who has grown up in the multicultural communities of urban New Zealand.

Samoan Minister Povi meets British Librarian Mary by chance in Papua New Guinea, while studying. Fierce attraction bursts into a family, while humorous cross-cultural differences escalate into violent confrontations. Povi struggles to regain the respect of his wife, his parishioners, his family and his son.

Not Even Broductions are critically acclaimed for their staging of The Minister’s Son during 2009, with nominations for Best Newcomers at the Wellington Fringe Festival, and Outstanding New Playwright of the Year for writer/actor James Nokise at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards.

The creative team for this season includes the original lead actor Asalemo Tofete handing the role of Povi to Semu Filipo (Shortland Street, Show of Hands) while Tofete takes on the role of director. Actress Kathryn Tyree continues as the female heart of this play, and Nokise (best known in New Zealand as a stand-up comedian) plays Povi and Mary's son Jimmy, based closely on his own personal experiences.

"A celebration of the strength of community and the joys and difficulties of family relationships.” - Sharron Matthews, theatreview.org
