Stamps mark 100 years of Surf Life Saving

The 2010/11 summer is dubbed the ‘Summer of the Surf Lifeguard’ - marking 100 years since the first life saving patrols began in New Zealand . Over the past century Surf Lifeguards have saved more than 50,000 lives at beaches around the country.

New Zealand Post is helping Surf Life Saving New Zealand celebrate its centenary with a commemorative stamp series – 100 Years of Volunteers – to be launched at a private function hosted by Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith at Parliament on Wednesday 3 November 2010.

The Surf Life Saving Centenary stamp issue comprises five stamps, each featuring a unique aspect of Surf Life Saving and includes a first day cover and presentation pack with commentary from Bob Harvey, President of Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

Grant Florence, Chief Executive Officer of Surf Life Saving New Zealand said: “Our Centenary not only celebrates the past 100 years – but it’s also a celebration of the next one hundred. During the ‘Summer of the Surf Lifeguard’ we have exciting celebrations and activities planned which will touch all New Zealanders. The Surf Life Saving message will be carried around the world thanks to these stamps and the support of New Zealand Post.”
