Drawing South Auckland

DRAWING SOUTH AUCKLAND

Fresh Gallery Otara is turning the tables on exhibition norms this month with an audience participation project called DRAWING SOUTH AUCKLAND to be held from 5-27 November.

Starting with empty walls, an installation of drawings on paper, submitted from local audiences and via email, will be constructed over three weeks.

Fresh Gallery Otara Manager Ema Tavola says that the project, which aims to construct a hand-made manifestation of the world surrounding the gallery, responds to demand from the community for more interactive programming.

“The project will reflect our local audiences including lots of young people who frequent the gallery, and our online community through social media platforms such as Twitter, Flickr and Facebook.”

“We would like to invite people to make us a drawing - loosely defined as a line-based composition on paper.”

The exhibition will grow on a daily basis and over the weeks will become a mass mural of pictures and messages. Daily documentation of drawings and installation development will be posted online, creating a virtual exhibition that reaches global audiences.

With this experimental user-generated project, Fresh Gallery Otara aims to engage audiences with the act of drawing and build a community-made depiction of South Auckland .

“The space, context and idea of South Auckland is currently evolving with the formation of the Auckland Council, so this is a particularly poignant time to ask our audience to share their conception of their community.”

DRAWING SOUTH AUCKLAND replaces the scheduled exhibition Open Canvas, which has been cancelled.
