Police appeal for help with arson inquiry

New Brighton, Christchurch District: Canterbury

Police appeal for help with arson inquiry

ARSON At about 2.50am on the morning of 15 October 2010 a Toyota van was parked in the north ramp parking area opposite the New Brighton Working Mens Club, Marine Parade.

The vehicle's occupant was approached in a threatening manner by a male and began to damage the van, breaking windows with an unknown weapon until he chased the victim away. Subsequent to this the van was set on fire using items from the van.

The van and its contents, valued at $4,000 and only partially insured, were destroyed.

The offender is described as a tidily dressed male, possibly Maori or part Maori, solid build, and aged about 40. He is between 1.8 and 1.85m tall with short cropped or balding hair and solid, like a body builder that hasn't been working in the gym lately, just a little fat. Probably about 20 stone.

If anyone has any information that could assist police in this enquiry is asked to contact Mike Phillips at New Brighton Police on 03 373 9122.
