Surf’s up at Beach Blast 2011

Beach Blast 2011 is offering free lessons for the next wave of surfers over two Saturdays at New Brighton beaches.

Beach Blast North kicks off this Saturday with the North Wai Boardriders Club and North Beach Surf Club introducing 7-12 year olds to the high-octane world of surfing, boogie boarding and body surfing.

Children are encouraged to get their first taste of riding the New Brighton swells under the watchful eyes of these trained surfers who will offer entertaining lessons packed with activities to get participants ripping in the shortest possible time.

The following Saturday (22 January) Wai Boardriders will offer the same introductory lessons at the South Beach with the South Brighton Surf Club.

The annual Beach Blasts offer a range of other great activities for all ages including cricket, Frisbee golf, volleyball and beach relays run by the Youth Alive Trust. Families can also take part in the sandcastle competition as well as enjoy the blo-carting demonstration and display. Spot prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

All activities, including equipment, are free of charge. Parents are asked to register their children for the water events on the day. .

This event is wheelchair accessible, with mobility mat and water chair provided.

Remember to be sunsmart, sunscreen available, slip, slop, slap and wrap.

The event is being organised by the Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sports Unit, and funded by the Burwood/Pegasus Community Board. Event partners are North Wai Boardriders, North Beach and South Brighton Surf Life Saving Clubs, Canterbury Surf Lifesaving, Youth Alive Trust, Canterbury Volleyball, Cancer Society, SISCO’s Surf School & Surf Shop, 91.3ZM, and Heller’s.

Beach Blast South

Date: Saturday 22 January
Time: 9.30am – 1pm
Location: South Brighton Surf Club, Marine Parade, opposite Bridge Street
If wet: Event will be cancelled
