Mayor to name Auckland’s first XV
A team of 15 distinguished Aucklanders will be announced next month as advocates for the city’s role as the hub of Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011).
Auckland Mayor Len Brown will name the group, to be affectionately known as Auckland’s first XV, at a function at Eden Park on 1 February.
The mayor, acting as the first XV’s head coach, wants to ensure that all Aucklanders are engaged, excited and enthusiastic about the Tournament and its benefits to the region
“This is all about spreading the word that RWC 2011 is the event for all Aucklanders – not just Rugby fans.
The selected members are all influential Aucklanders who reflect the diversity of our city with representatives from business, creative/entertainment fields, sport and the media.
“We want to engage a diverse group of “champions” who will be respected and listened to by a wide range of Auckland audiences,” says Len Brown.
“All of the 15 selected are passionate Aucklanders who are excited about the opportunities RWC 2011 presents for Auckland.”
The mayor and his fellow selectors Alan Whetton, Buck Shelford and Grant Fox – a trio of All Blacks who all tasted RWC success in 1987 – say there were a number of difficult calls to make when selecting the team.
“Like any team announcement there were automatic selections and a few bolters that will surprise anyone trying to pick their own 15,” says Len Brown.
And as is often the case the captain of the team has picked himself, with Auckland’s recently appointed ambassador Councillor Sir John Walker taking up the captaincy.
The legendary middle distance runner and founder of South Auckland programme Field of Dreams says RWC 2011 is a once in a lifetime event that Aucklanders need to embrace.
“From the completion of Eden Park’s redevelopment to transport and waterfront upgrades charging ahead, it certainly looks like we’ll have the infrastructure ready for RWC 2011. But will Aucklanders be ready?”
From being the face of the event through volunteering, to ensuring the best customer service in our restaurants, hotels and retail stores, to adopting a second team to support after the All Blacks, there are numerous opportunities for Aucklanders to get involved in RWC 2011.
Sir John says he wants to inspire fellow Aucklanders to be passionate about the city’s role in RWC 2011.
“We want all Aucklanders to know that this is an event they can be involved in, be proud of, and benefit from.”
