Warning: further risk of flooding at high tide tonight

Parts of Auckland face further localised flooding at high tide tonight at 11.21pm.

The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Coordination Centre is activated and working closely with emergency services across the region.

Clive Manley, Civil Defence Controller for Auckland, advises people in low lying areas to be prepared.

“Areas that have already flooded are likely to suffer flooding again at high tide this evening,” Mr Manley says.

“Although the rain has eased, the combination of a high tide and strong winds means the worst may be yet to come.

“People should stay off the roads and only travel this evening if it’s absolutely necessary.

“Contractors and civil defence response teams have been assisting through the day with sandbagging in affected areas.”

The areas worst affected by flooding this morning were:
§ Auckland’s lower CBD and Eastern suburbs
§ Maraetai
§ Leigh
§ Herald Island
§ Parts of State Highway 16, State Highway 1 and Tamaki Drive.
If you live in a low-lying area prone to flooding, you should have a getaway kit ready in case you need to move to higher ground.
Your getaway kit should have:
§ Essential items
§ Family documents e.g. passports and drivers license
§ Personal items e.g. medication and toiletries.
