Aucklanders should still exercise caution

Aucklanders should still exercise caution

The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Coordination Centre is still activated and has been monitoring the weather situation overnight.

Widespread heavy rainfalls have impacted Auckland in the North and North Eastern exposed areas have experienced localised flooding resulting from increased storm water and rising sea levels.

The MetService advises strong winds are expecting to pick up to gale force over the next few hours.

The areas that continue to be affected by localised flooding are:
• Whangateau
• Herald Island
• Maraetai
• Central Business District
• Eastern Bays including Remuera and Mission Bay
Residents have been experiencing issues with the power throughout Auckland.

Clive Manley, Civil Defence Controller for Auckland says people are still advised to exercise caution on the roads and be vigilant.

“People are returning to work after a weekend of bad weather. It is important that they are safe on the roads as there is likely to be debris and other materials that could make the roads unsafe.

“People are also advised not to go beach swimming on the east coast for the next two days, due to the risks posed by sewage overflows into the harbour.

“It has been great to see everyone involved coming together and working well as a team, from police and other emergency services, Auckland Council contractors and civil defence staff.

“It was good too, to see how the media played their important role in getting key messages out to the community.”
