Media Release From Greater Wellington Regional Council

The Streets Alive walking challenge kicks off next Tuesday (1 February) with great prizes on offer.

Streets Alive is a six-week workplace walking challenge, supported by Greater Wellington Regional Council, that encourages people to use their feet instead of cars to get from A to B.

“February and March are often some of the finest months in the Wellington region so the challenge is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the weather, get some exercise and be in to win some fabulous prizes,” says Claire Pascoe, Greater Wellington’s Sustainable Transport Planner.

Prizes include a $500 team lunch at Logan Brown, $200 Shoe Clinic vouchers and a team night tour of Zealandia wildlife sanctuary. Random spot prizes will also be given out throughout the challenge.

Teams can comprise two to six people. “It’s always good for a workplace to have a few teams in the challenge as a bit of rivalry spurs people on.”

The challenge is open to all workplaces in the Wellington region and to enter you can register at http://www.streetsalive.org.nz/. Participants log all their walking trips online, and you can chart your team’s progress against other teams in the contest.

Only trips that are more than five minutes long and have a transport purpose can be logged; recreational walking journeys are not eligible.

“So a walk to the shops, work, a café, a bus stop or train station, or walking kids to school or sports, are all loggable. There are a few different categories for teams to win, including a category for the highest number of car trips replaced by walking.”

The challenge finishes on 15 March and winners will be announced the very next day at the Walk to Work Day celebrations in Frank Kitts Park.

“And hopefully participants will be feeling so great after the challenge that every day from then will be a walk to work day!”
