Navy Sends Three Ships to Waitangi

The Royal New Zealand Navy will play a major part in the commemorative ceremonies at Waitangi during the 171st Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The Navy has been invited by the people of Tai Tokerau to attend Waitangi Day celebrations in the Bay of Islands and to continue its proud history.

The Navy first paraded at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in 1947 and the tradition still lives on in 2011 in spectacular fashion.

This year three ships will be in the Bay of Islands. ANZAC Frigate, HMNZS TE KAHA, will anchor off Waitangi from 4 - 6 February. Offshore Patrol Vessel, HMNZS OTAGO and Inshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS HAWEA, will be berthed in Opua from 3 February and will join TE KAHA on the morning of 6 February.

There are two Ceremonial Beat Retreat Ceremonies scheduled for both Saturday 5 February and Sunday 6 February with His Excellency the Governor General and the Chief of Navy reviewing the ceremonies respectively. During the ceremonies the public will be entertained by the Navy Band before a 100 man Royal Guard of Honour march on with military precision and pride to conduct the ceremonial lowering of the white ensign.

Throughout the celebrations there will be performances by the Navy Maori Cultural Group and Navy Band with public concerts in Kerikeri, Paihia and Russell.

Saturday 5 February 2011
0800 Colours Ceremony at Waitangi Treaty Ground Flagpole
1000 - 1200 Schoolchildren tour and lunch onboard HMNZS OTAGO and HAWEA
1245 - 1430 Rehearsal for Beat Retreat at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds
1645 - 1730 Beat Retreat & Ceremonial Sunset -reviewed by the Governor General
