Zumba for older adults at Garden Gala

Zumba for older adults at Garden Gala

Older adults can experience the excitement of zumba at this year’s Garden Gala on 17 February at Riccarton House.

Mele Paoese, a licensed zumba instructor, will demonstrate the popular dance-based fitness phenomenon to add to the array of regular events available at Garden Gala.

The 11-year old event for over 60s continually broadens its appeal with new inclusions – apart from the zumba event, this year’s line-up includes the St Peter's Church Cardmakers (handmade cards on display, for sale and make-your-own) and Quilts for Kids. Hands-on activities such as Tai Chi, gentle exercise, floral design, croquet, woodturning, lace making and cake decorating are part of the regular activities.

Quilts for Kids is an enthusiastic group who make quilts for children who experience chronic or life-threatening health issues. Relying primarily on donations, they have made over 100 quilts for the children since 2007.

Also back in the mix is the St Teresa's Primary School choir who had taken part in Garden Gala for many years and following a break in 2010 have returned to perform again.

The programme will feature over 20 stalls and a dozen performances, while also offering recreational and physical activities and information to increase the social well-being of Christchurch’s ageing population.

Each year more than 500 older adults enjoy the Gala at Riccarton House. The historical Riccarton House and Gardens, home to Canterbury's pioneering Deans family (the first Europeans to settle on the Plains in 1843), consists of two historic buildings set in parkland and gardens bordered by the River Avon and a native forest reserve.

The Garden Gala is also a chance to meander through Riccarton House and its grounds; 45 minute long tours of the restored homestead begin at 1.00pm for $5. Or you can do the full tour at 2pm for $13 for seniors.

Parking is available on the southern lawn of Riccarton House grounds; entry to the car parking area is off Riccarton House’s driveway. If postponed due to bad weather, the Gala will be held on Friday, 18 February.

This event is supported by the Riccarton/Wigram Community Board.
