Youth Match Yacht Racing Champs
Youth Match Racing Champs
Match-racing comes to the Wellington waterfront this weekend, with eight teams of under-21 sailors from New Zealand, Australia and Italy competing in the CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Champs. The home teams will face tough competition after winning the Harken International Youth Match Racing Championship at Newport (New South Wales) last November, and achieving podium results in several other contests.
Organised by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, the regatta consists of a series of short races, with two boats in each race. The four-boat fleet ensures non-stop action, and the “match-racing” format is designed to test competitor’s strategic, tactical, and sailing skills, while providing quick action for spectators. The inner harbour course adds a special challenge, with blustery conditions requiring quick thinking and rapid reactions. Racing begins on Thursday, February 17, and continues until Sunday afternoon.
