Wellington’s sister city – Sakai – sends funds
The Mayor of Sakai city, Mr Osami Takeyama, recently expressed his sympathies for those affected by Christchurch’s earthquake to New Zealand’s ambassador in Tokyo, Mr Ian Kennedy.
In addition to sending condolences and message of support, the Sakai city government donated 1,000,000 yen ($16,236.00NZD) toward relief efforts through the New Zealand Embassy in Sakai and the Japanese Red Cross.
“We are extremely appreciative of such support. We value the sister city relationship we have with Sakai and this is an amazing example of how important the strength of these relationships are” says Mayor Celia Wade-Brown. “On behalf of all Wellingtonians, New Zealanders, and in particular those in Christchurch, we thank Sakai city”.
“It is heartening to see this kind of support from all over the globe. We will continue to do what we can to support Christchurch and are very appreciative of the outpouring of aid from around the world.”
Wellington maintains three sister city relationships – Sakai, Beijing and Xiamen. These are long-term relationships based on diverse linkages – including cultural, educational and business ties. Our sister city relationship with Sakai was established in 1993 by then Mayor Fran Wilde.
