Need for medium-term housing before families return to Christchurch

Plans to accommodate Christchurch residents in Auckland who require temporary housing are being prepared by Auckland Council’s Civil Defence team, working with government agencies and migrant support groups.

“Large numbers arriving in Auckland initially stay in emergency housing or with friends and family, however many will need more medium-term accommodation before returning home,” says Auckland Civil Defence controller Clive Manley.

A review of all accommodation needs and matching housing availability in Auckland is now being carried out by Housing New Zealand, the council’s Civil Defence team, Ministry of Social Development and other agencies.

Working together, the agencies are reaching out to their combined community networks, including ethnic groups with special cultural needs.

“Bottom line, it’s about being able to provide the most suitable accommodation for a diverse range of people before they are able to return, whether that’s in the short or medium term,” said Mr Manley.

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management is reminding New Zealanders that cash donations are the best way to help Cantabrians. Donations can be made via the Red Cross, Salvation Army and branches of the ANZ, National, Westpac, ASB, BNZ and Kiwibank banks. Details can be found at www.civildefence.govt.nz.
