Trees to be felled in Hagley Park – 8:00pm 7/3/11

Trees to be felled in Hagley Park – 8:00pm Monday 7th March 2011

24 trees adjacent to the Armagh Street Car park entrance to Hagley Park will be felled on Tuesday 8 March, after an assessment identified severe root plate damage which poses a significant safety risk to the public.

Two large oaks fell during the quake due to liquefaction of the ground and a subsequent four were felled due to movement causing a serious risk of the trees falling.

An assessment of the adjacent trees was conducted by City Council staff and staff from the Waikato Institute of Technology’s Arboriculture section.

Trees also fell in the Botanic Gardens and an assessment of the tree stock has identified several trees that pose immediate safety issues and require removal.

Replanting of trees will be conducted as part of the earthquake recovery programme.
