Ian Wells steps down as Chairman of Cricket Wellington Board

Ian Wells has stepped down as Chairman of Cricket Wellington. Peter Garty, the Deputy Chairman, has been elected as Cricket Wellington’s new Chairman.

Ian Wells has been a member of the Cricket Wellington Board since 2004, and had been its Chairman since 2006. Ian's careful stewardship steered Cricket Wellington through a period of extensive change in cricket, including ongoing contributions to New Zealand Cricket at the national level. At the local level he is a Life Member and former administrator of the Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club.

He has also been heavily involved in tennis and football in Wellington over a long period, is a former Chairman of Wellington Tennis, and was the Chairman of New Zealand Tennis for 27 years. Wells is a Life Member of both Wellington Tennis and New Zealand Tennis. He is a Life Member of the Miramar Rangers Football Club, and was a Board Member of New Zealand Football for eight years.

In his professional life Wells was the General Manager of Wellington Newspapers where he was recognised as an industry leader in marketing and advertising.

Wells said Cricket Wellington is in good hands. “The time feels right for me to step aside from the Chairman’s role and I know Peter Garty will do a tremendous job as the new Chairman,” Wells said.

Incoming Chairman Peter Garty expressed his enthusiasm for accepting the challenge of the Cricket Wellington Chairmanship and in working closely with Chief Executive Gavin Larsen: “As we all know these are challenging times for sport at all levels and my focus will be very much on helping Cricket Wellington move forward as an organisation in this demanding yet stimulating cricket environment.”

Cricket Wellington Chief Executive Gavin Larsen paid tribute to the Chairmanship of Wells: “Ian’s leadership of cricket in our region has been outstanding and his passion for the game is always evident. His contribution around the Cricket Wellington Board table has been invaluable.”
