The Environmental Defence Society today welcomed the release of the Auckland Plan Discussion Document by Mayor Len Brown.
"The discussion document Auckland Unleashed is a great start," said EDS Chairman Gary Taylor.
"Overall, it provides a useful overview of the key issues facing Auckland over the next 30 years.
"Topics such as urban form, community development and transport infrastructure have been comprehensively addressed.
"The proposals for the environment show commendable intent. But these need further development and refinement if they are to provide a coherent environmental strategy for the region going forward.
"It is clear that the Council's thinking around economic and social development is more evolved than that for environmental management.
"It is essential that we get the environmental elements of the Auckland Plan right, because they provide the crucial underpinnings for a liveable and economically successful city.
"EDS looks forward to working with Mayor Brown and the Council to further refine and develop the eco city principles," concluded Mr Taylor.
