‘Love NZ’ public place recycling bins have arrived in Hastings

Seven public place recycling bins have been installed at key tourist spots around Hastings District in time for the Rugby World Cup 2011.

The ‘Love NZ’ recycling bins have been provided by the Glass Packaging Forum and are part of a national campaign designed to help maintain our ‘clean, green’ image.

‘Love NZ’ is a partnership between the New Zealand Government, industry and local government, which will set up a network of recycling bins in high-foot traffic areas and tourist hot spots around New Zealand.

Hastings District Council was successful in its request to ‘Love NZ’ to have the public place recycling bins installed in the Hastings CBD, at a number of locations along the coastal cycle path and the newly installed effluent disposal points for campervans.

Hastings District Council Waste Minimisation Officer, Dominic Salmon says “over 30 percent of all beverage containers are consumed away from home. Having ‘Love NZ’ recycling bins in our district means that we can all recycle our drink bottles and beverage cans when we are out and about.”

“Hastings residents already embrace recycling with 6000 tonnes of packaging recycling being diverted from the Omarunui landfill every year. The ‘Love NZ’ brand will allow residents and tourists alike to clearly identify recycling bins and is another positive step towards sustainable waste management in the Hastings District” Mr Salmon says.

The Glass Packaging Forum is launching Hastings’ ‘Love NZ’ recycling bins today (Thursday) at 10.30am in the Hawke’s Bay Opera House. The event is to be attended by the Minister for the Environment Hon Dr Nick Smith and Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule.
