NZ On Air has announced the first grants to be made under its new MakingTracks music funding scheme.

Thirty-three artists are receiving support in this inaugural round. Thirteen will get up to $10,000 to help meet the costs of both recording a song and making a music video and a further 20 will get $6,000 to help with the costs of shooting a music video.

NZ On Air received 157 applications in the July round. A panel of seven industry experts decided how the money would be allocated.

“It’s an exciting and eclectic mix of new names and some familiar names,” said NZ On Air CEO, Jane Wrightson.

“The MakingTracks changes are all about funding a greater diversity of new music taking into account both mainstream audiences and music for alternative platforms like student radio and online exposure. The list reflects that diversity.”

“We used to be all about commercial music for commercial radio audiences. Now we are reaching out to embrace alternative music for more diverse audience tastes as well,” she said.

“The panel is an important part of the changes we have made to our funding scheme. It brings a diversity of viewpoints to the decision-making process.”
MakingTracks was launched in response to last December’s Caddick Report which looked at the way NZ On Air funds contemporary music.

NZ On Air expects to invest $2.5 million into new singles and videos across ten funding rounds in the year to 30 June 2012. Applications for the next round close on 1 August.
