City centre and waterfront parts of Auckland Plan endorsed

Two key parts of the Auckland Plan have been endorsed and adopted for consultation by Auckland Council today.

Plans for the waterfront and the city centre will guide the development of these areas in the coming 20 to 30 years. The Auckland Plan and all its supporting plans now go forward for public consultation starting on 20 September.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown identified the need for these plans to unlock Auckland’s economic and destination potential.

“To ensure our whole region can perform economically, its commercial hub needs to be performing at a top level. If the city centre is performing well commercially and in retail and for tourists, it will be felt from Wellsford to Bombay – everyone benefits.

“The economy is the crux, but with many more people set to live, work, and visit the city centre it has got to be a place Aucklanders are proud of, excited about and visitors go away talking about for all the right reasons. We are already on the way,” he says.

The Waterfront Plan does this by building on the previous public feedback, plans and strategies for the waterfront, to identify the next tranche of investments and projects to put into action that will unleash the waterfront’s true potential.

The City Centre Masterplan contains cost-effective, smart solutions to transform the city centre, working with rather than changing the existing infrastructure, and transforming it in the minimum number of moves.

The public consultation on the Auckland Plan runs from 20 September to 25 October 2011.

From 20 September, all draft plans and online feedback will be available at www.theaucklandplangovt.nz and www.waterfrontauckland.govt.nz.

Copies of the plans will be available to read in all of Auckland’s libraries along with feedback forms which you can submit at the libraries.
