25 year old man in Wellington Hospital following serious assault in Tory Street
A 25 year old man is in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following an assault in Tory Street in the early hours of this morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard of the Wellington CIB says at about 3:50am, the victim and two of his friends were approached by a group of men opposite the Tournament carpark on Tory Street.
"A serious assault has then taken place and as a result, the victim has sustained significant head injuries. One of his friends received minor injuries and has been treated in hospital. The third male was unharmed."
D/S/S Howard says, "We are urging anyone who was in the Courtenay Place area between 3am and 4:30am this morning, who witnessed any fights or incidents or who may have seen the offenders running off along Tory Street around 4am to come forward and speak to Police as soon as possible."
She says enquiries so far indicate there were three other people in the vicinity at the time of the incident who may have seen something or be able to assist Police with enquiries.
They are described as Pacific Island males, aged in their early to mid twenties. One of them was of medium to solid build, around six foot tall, with brown spiky hair, wearing dark blue or black jeans, a blue or green t-shirt and white shoes, with a tattoo of a Maori design on his right arm.
The second person was wearing distinctive wooden rosary beads with a cross around his neck and had a Pacific-style tattoo on his arm. He was around 6 foot tall of solid build with short cropped hair and was wearing a purple t-shirt, dark grey or blue jeans and grey canvas shoes.
Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard says Police would like to identify these three people and speak to them as soon as possible.
"Anyone who either witnessed the assault or noticed any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Courtenay Place and Tory Street between 3am and 4:30am are urged to contact Wellington Police as soon as possible on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
