Wellington gets set for big weekend double-header

Wellington gets set for big weekend double-header

It’s going to be a big weekend in Wellington as the city gets set to play host to the first of three rugby double-headers. And there’s plenty happening at the Rugby Village FANZONE and Civic Village.

Highlights include the opening of the light projection show Illuma tonight at 7.30pm where Wellington’s waterfront will be transformed with light and colour. The best vantage points to view the show include the City to Sea Bridge, around the lagoon, at the waterfront FANZONE, and in front of Circa Theatre. But don’t worry if you can’t make it along tonight as it runs every night at the same time until Sunday 9 October.

Bands The Beat Girls and Twinset will also perform tonight on stage at the Rugby Village FANZONE before the Australia v USA match live on the big screen at 8.30pm. The FANZONE will close down after the game.

Saturday sees MC Jed Thian (Jedi) take the stage from 12 noon, The Thomas Oliver Band at 4.30pm and a French crepe-eating competition at 7.45pm before the live screening of the France v NZ game.

Remember you can also head along to the warmth and comfort of the family-friendly Town Hall. This is an alcohol-free venue where you can also see live coverage on a big screen of weekend matches with plenty of free community and multicultural performances on stage in the lead-up.

Highlights include Argentinean Milonga (a tango showcase) performing at the Town Hall from 6–10pm tonight and the colourful Argentina Tango Bus in Civic Square from 6pm. Also sample culinary delights from around the globe at the Flavours! World Food Fair from 10am on Saturday and see a Samoan cultural performance showcase from 12 noon–3pm on Sunday before the Fiji v Samoa game screens live on the big screen at 3.30pm.
