Wellington Town Hall to host RWC semis and finals
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has announced that the Wellington Town Hall will screen the Rugby World Cup 2011 semi-finals and final.
Mayor Wade-Brown said she was delighted that the Council will continue to provide a family friendly, alcohol free venue to watch the two semi-finals and the final on the big screen at the town hall.
The dates for the semi-finals are October 15 and 16. The final will be held October 23.
“While the official Fan Zone will cease on October 9, the date of the last match in Wellington, our decision on this is a reflection of the popularity of the Rugby World Cup,” she said.
“Operating the Fan Zone until the quarter-finals was the plan we consulted on and in our bid for hosting the pool matches and quarter-finals, and follows the resource consent Council applied for to operate the Fan Zone.
“The Fan Zone and the four-week Festival of Carnivale were designed to coincide with the matches being held in the capital.
“We’re aware there will be huge local interest in the final Rugby World Cup games and we are providing an option to watch the matches for free. This is part of a country-wide approach, many overseas supporters are likely to be following their teams to Auckland for the semi-finals and finals.”
