Tauranga Environment Centre supports oil spill clean
up operation
The Tauranga Environment Centre has offered assistance to Tauranga Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and other organisations involved in the Rena Oil Spill clean-up operation. The Environment Centre also supports the rahui put in place by the Tauranga Moana Iwi Customary Fisheries Trust and is liaising with local groups to look at protection measures for the Waimapu wetlands and Matua estuary in the instance of oil spreading further into the Harbour.
There is a good level of information being shared on the response between these groups and the Environment Centre is in turn providing updates to an informed network of contacts. Regular updates will also be posted on our homepage (www.envirohub.org.nz).
For those wanting further information, a public briefing will be held this evening at Tauranga Boys College. This meeting will include updates from Maritime NZ, local MP Simon Bridges, local mayors, and the chairman of BOP Regional Council. The briefing will commence at 7pm tonight (Tuesday October 11th) at the Graham Young Youth Centre, Tauranga Boys' College, Cameron Road.
