RWC 2011 semi-finals: Wellington screenings
The big game continues to be played on the big screens at the waterfront FANZONE and the Wellington Town Hall. Both venues are showing the two semi-final matches this weekend.
The FANZONE will open at 5.30pm and close at 11pm on Saturday and Sunday. The Town Hall will open at 8pm and close at the same time.
The matches kick off at 9pm on Saturday (Wales v France) and Sunday (Australia v New Zealand) but it might pay to get there early for a good seat and to enjoy the free entertainment.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says she’s looking forward to seeing these venues buzzing. “Wellingtonians have flocked to the FANZONE by the thousands and we’re delighted to keep the party going for the semis and final. The Town Hall is a great option for families and just in case the weather puts a dampener on things,” she said.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved – in particular the performers, police, and our hardworking staff – for making the extension through to the final possible, and for all their help so far.”
Council Sport and Events Portfolio Leader Councillor John Morrison also paid a special tribute to the army of Wellingtonians who have stepped up to do volunteer work "throughout this wonderful World Cup festival in the Capital. Their work and help has been invaluable and hugely appreciated.”
Cr Morrison says there’s plenty more RWC action to come. “There’s one more weekend left – with the Final being screened in both venues on Sunday 23 October – and I’m sure I’m not being overly optimistic in saying the All Blacks will be there so there’s bound to be plenty of interest.”
The waterfront FANZONE will feature busking-style entertainment in the lead up to the match. There will also be face-painting, music videos and giveaways. Food will be available – and there will also be a licensed area. Entry to the FANZONE will be controlled by security staff.
The Town Hall remains an unlicensed, family-friendly area. It will also feature entertainment and giveaways.
