Christmas trees can be much more than a centerpiece to a pile of expensive presents.

The 30 trees in the Cathedral’s annual Christmas Tree Festival create a display that is both moving and informative, according to organiser Jim Wiseman.

This will be the fourth Christmas Tree festival run at Nelson Cathedral. Mr Wiseman said trees often have a lot to say about the various groups who decorate them, which this year includes churchgroups, retirement homes, youth groups, service groups, community organisations as well as individuals and business groups.

“A lot of thought goes into the decorations - the festival creates an opportunity for the people of Nelson and our visitors to view a very moving collection of trees in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere, “ he said. “It’s a good place to take a break from Christmas shopping or for a special outing.”

There will be a memory tree to record names of loved ones, for a gold coin donation, and the Association of Anglican Women will offer tea and coffee for a small charge.
The festival opens on Tuesday, 6 November at 7pm and runs until Wednesday, 21 December, daily from 9am to 6pm, excluding Sunday services at 8am, 10am and 6pm. There is no charge for entry but donations are appreciated.

Groups are more than welcome to visit, but are asked to advise the cathedral office on 548 1008 (mornings only) if a large group is coming and will require refreshments.

School groups are welcome with teacher/parent supervision. Mr Wiseman said many school groups visited last year and the children really enjoyed the spectacle.

He said the Cathedral organises the festival as part of its ministry to the city and community, and is very thankful to all who contribute trees to make the event so successful.
