Positively Wellington Tourism Cuts to the Chase with New Game
The release of a game that gives chase to Wellington’s iconic landmarks is right on track, according to Positively Wellington Tourism (PWT).
PWT today launched Welly Cable Chase, an online game produced as part of its digital marketing work.
Chief Executive David Perks says Welly Cable Chase – which sees users navigate a cable car to collect Wellington landmarks – was created as a fun and creative way to get Wellingtonians in the know about their city and drive traffic downtown.
The game was developed based on the findings from PWT’s 2011 Wellington Advent Calendar which saw a record number of visitors to the site not only from Wellington, but also from other New Zealand areas and across the globe.
“Last year’s advent calendar was a huge success. Overall, we had 154,594 visits from 61,572 unique visitors. While the majority of visits were from Wellington, or other New Zealand destinations, there were over 9,700 visits from 104 different countries around the world.
“From a tourism perspective that’s a significant reach.”
He says most people remember when Snake was the only game available on many mobile phones.
“Snake was simple, fun and addictive. We’ve taken the mechanics of Snake, applied them to a new medium and given it some Wellington flavour.”
Welly Cable Chase comprises a cable car that gets longer as the player maneuvers it around the screen collecting Wellington icons like Cuba’s Bucket Fountain, Te Papa and the Brooklyn Wind Turbine.
Each icon the user collects is either a useful Downtown Wellington tip or an instant prize.
“Once you’ve played the game, you can enter your details to be in to win one of five major prizes ranging from free Flight coffee for a year to an absolutely positively amazing weekend in Wellington which includes two nights accommodation and breakfast at Amora Hotel Wellington, a spa package at Bodyhaven, dinner at Hippopotamus Restaurant, a Close Encounter for two at Wellington Zoo, $100 to spend at the Underground Market and Rhys Darby tickets.”
