Auckland Council to continue to take hazardous waste
Auckland Council is issuing this media release to clarify a statement from New Zealand First MP Andrew Williams regarding its collection of hazardous material.
Mr Williams suggests that council proposes to halt the collection of hazardous waste. That is not correct. Council is proposing to move from a mobile service to a fixed-point service; it will continue to operate hazardous waste disposal facilities around the region.
“Council is well aware of the public good service it provides in collecting this material and has not suggested it will stop doing so,” said John Dragicevich, Auckland Council’s infrastructure and environmental services manager. “We are simply, looking at the most efficient and effective way of doing this.
“Residents will still be able to drop off hazardous material, such as batteries and chemicals, at our facilities and they’ll be able to do so at any time, not just when there are collections.”
The aim is to eventually replace the Hazmobile service with drop-off facilities. The mobile service will continue until enough facilities are available to make drop-off convenient and easy for Aucklanders.
Drop-off sites are currently located in Henderson, Waiuku, Wellsford, Waiheke, Great Barrier Island, and Rodney. More sites will be developed over time.
All these facilities accept hazardous waste free of charge from residential customers.
