Wellington Police investigating further indecent assault

Wellington Police investigating further indecent assault in Eastern Suburbs

Wellington Police are investigating a further indecent assault which occurred in the Eastern Suburbs earlier this afternoon.

Detective Inspector Paul Basham, officer in charge of the Wellington CIB says, "At around 1:45pm this afternoon, a 29 year old woman was approached by an unknown male near the intersection of Tavistock and Buckingham Roads. The victim was grabbed from behind and indecently assaulted. She had been walking from Sutherland Road."

After the incident, the offender then ran off down Tavistock Road towards Queens Drive, Kilbirnie.

"Today's incident is similar to one two days ago, where a 30 year old woman was grabbed from behind and indecently assaulted on Rodrigo Road in Melrose. "

Detective Inspector Basham says Police are concerned about these two similar incidents in as many days, both in broad daylight.

"There's a good possibility the events are linked and we're urging any members of the public who may have seen anyone or anything suspicious in the Eastern Suburbs this week to come forward and speak with Police."

The offender in both incidents is described as a male Maori in his late teens or early twenties of medium build. In both instances, the offender was wearing a black puffer jacket and dark trousers.

Detective Inspector Basham says, "We want to identify and locate this offender as quickly as possible before anything more serious occurs. We urge any female who may have been spoken to inappropriately or followed in the Eastern Suburbs in recent times to also come forward and speak with us."

Anyone with any information should contact Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
