Last round of earthquake briefings

MEDIA ADVISORY
Friday 26 October 2012

Last round of earthquake briefings

The last of the ‘Wellington Rocks’ community earthquake briefings will take place over the next two weeks.

The briefings are hosted by Wellington City Council and GNS Science, with support from the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO).

The briefings are a chance to hear from GNS scientists about the earthquake risk to the city, what has been learnt from previous earthquakes in the region and what they are learning from the Canterbury earthquake sequence.

They provide an overview of what has already been done and what is planned in the future to improve the resilience of our city. Information will also be provided to residents to help them make sure they are ready to get through an earthquake.

Around a thousand Wellingtonians have so far attended one of the 16 briefings held over the past two months.

The last four briefing sessions will be held at the following locations:

• Miramar – 7.30pm, Tuesday 30 October (Miramar Community Centre, 27 Chelsea Street)
• Aro Valley – 7.30pm, Thursday 1 November (Aro Valley Community Centre, 48 Aro Street)
• Churton Park – 7pm, Tuesday 6 November (Amesbury School Community Hall, 48 Amesbury Drive)
• Seatoun – 7.30pm, Wednesday 7 November (Seatoun School, 59 Burnham Street).

All briefings are free. To register to attend a session, visit Wellington.govt.nz/earthquake or phone 499 4444.

Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) staff are attending each briefing session and able to meet with communities to help work with them to improve preparedness and resilience through local initiatives. They can be contacted at wremo@gw.govt.nz.
