Continuing mostly dry for now

The mostly dry, settled spell will continue over the weekend and into the early part of next week.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"The large anticyclone is still dominating our weather so there are still no decent rain makers on the horizon."

Supported by an upper ridge, the anticyclone is likely to remain firmly in place for a bit longer. A sub-tropical low will brush the northeast of the North Island over the weekend to bring just a few light showers around Gisborne.

Later in the weekend, as a weak front slides past the far south of the South Island, only trivial amounts of rain can be expected there.

The tropics have become more active this week with the recent formation of cyclone Sandra over the Coral Sea. It is still too early to tell whether Sandra will have any impact on New Zealand, but the Solomon Islands,Vanuatu and New Caledonia will be keenly monitoring the cyclone's progress over the next few days.
