New café for Cornwall Park
A new café to be built in Cornwall Park will meet growing public demand for a more modern, convenient source of food and coffee in the park among the four million people who now use it every year.
Announced by the Cornwall Park Trust Board today, the café will be built between the Flagpole and Rotunda on the eastern side of the park, which is its most heavily patronised area.
Its mix of “grab and go” food, coffee and eat-in café dining is a response to strong demand for something that can easily fit in with a wide range of uses of the park, Michael Ayrton, Park Director, said.
“People have been telling us they want a simpler, more casual style of café as well as the park’s much-loved and more formal kiosk.
“This new café will be situated where the park gets its highest visitor numbers, where people come to relax for picnics, or listen to music in the rotunda.
“Its open, modern structure will lend itself to both grabbing a quick coffee and a leisurely lunch. It will add to people’s enjoyment of the park, while fitting in very well with the overall landscape and feeling of that location.”
Reflecting the park’s heritage, archaeological inspections had been carried out in advance to ensure the site did not contain any artefacts.
The new café is expected to open in April 2014.
It will offer food and beverages at accessible pricing for the people who use the park, and will have an ice cream counter.
The project was formally launched with a simple sod-turning ceremony and blessing at the site.
