The two rescue helicopters responding to the crash in the Waioeka Gorge have been unable to reach the crash scene due to bad weather. The helicopters have been diverted to Opotiki Airfield. The crash victims have now been roped out of the river bed. They will be transported by land ambulance to Opotiki and flown to hospital from there.
The car involved in the crash was a small hatchback, and crashed 15 metres down a steep bank into the river.
There are no updates on the condition of the victims.
