ANZAC closures of Wellesley Street East for cycleway project

As the Grafton Gully cycleway project enters the final months of construction, the NZ Transport Agency reminds drivers of project-related closures of Wellesley Street East in central Auckland.

Wellesley Street East between Princes Street and the motorway ramps was closed earlier this month until next Monday 28 April to complete construction of the cycleway tunnel under the road near AUT and Auckland University.

There are full closures of both Wellesley Street East and the State Highway 1 (SH1) off-ramp, along with restricted movements from the SH16 off-ramp.

• Until next Monday (28 April) the two lanes of Wellesley Street East heading toward Auckland Hospital and the Auckland Domain will be closed between Princes Street and motorway ramps. The SH1 off-ramp will be closed, and the SH16 off-ramp restricted to a right hand turn only – towards the hospital and the domain.
• Until next Monday (28 April) the two westbound lanes of Wellesley Street East heading into the central city will be closed between the motorway ramps and Princes Street.

“The closures and restricted access will mean some congestion and delays – especially for people planning to attend ANZAC Day commemoration services at the War Memorial Museum in the domain on Friday,” says the Transport Agency’s acting Highway Manager, Steve Mutton.

“We’re taking advantage of low traffic volumes over the Easter/ANZAC Day break, however people should allow more time to get where they are going and be patient.”

The Grafton Gully cycleway is a 1.9 kilometre-long extension of the Northwestern Cycleway and is due to be completed in September.

“We’re working with both Auckland Transport and Auckland Council to provide people who cycle in the city with additional safer route options” says Mr Mutton.

Other improvements to the Northwestern Cycleway are also underway on the Western Ring Route Projects along Northwestern Motorway (SH16) at the causeway, and the Lincoln Road and Te Atatu Road interchanges. Cycleway improvements are also part of the upgrade of the St Lukes interchange due to start shortly.
