Little Black Bird Cafe

Press Release – for immediate release

New café offers culinary experience – The Little Black Bird café, Market Street, Hastings

A new café in Market Street opened its doors to the public on Monday morning. The beautifully revamped Little Black Bird café has taken over the old ‘Bay Espresso’ site and the new owners have created a cool green, white and wood interior that is calm and contemporary, with a variety of seating from small intimate to large communal tables.

Owners Lucinda and Ben have worked together in past lives (varying from pastry chef to Nutritionist and yoga teacher), both individually promising themselves in January that they would own their own café by September. They had a similar vision so the sensible thing to do was open one together, and lo and behold they managed to pull the whole thing off not long after their predicted date.

This is by no means your run of the mill café. Lucinda and Ben make almost everything on site, simply, and with seasonal, fresh, local and organic produce where possible. From baking their own bread, rolls and wraps, as well as making pastries and relishes - everything is freshly prepared and beautifully made. There are also many gluten and dairy free options.

Everything they sell in the café is a bit unique. They make their own cold pressed juices on site as well as fresh herbal teas. They stock Zealong Tea, grown and made in Hamilton. The coffee is Red Rabbit ‘Hopper’ – they are the only outlet to sell this coffee outside of Wellington. Their wine and beer list has been meticulously chosen favouring handmade, boutique Hawke’s Bay wines, such as William Murdoch Syrah and Dan Brennan Sauvignon Blanc, meaning the wines are rarely seen elsewhere. They also support local artisan beer and cider producers such as Zeelandt and Edgebrook.

Lucinda and Ben’s ethos for producing fresh and simple, healthy food means you can start the day with such dishes as a delicious gluten free Granola or Buckwheat pancakes with salmon, to a full English breakfast. Lunches could be soft shell crab with chilli and lime and Asian greens, to their take on the burger - lean meat in a homemade bun. The pair both confess to enjoying a fresh Asian influence in many of their dishes.

They are already hatching plans for the future such as opening on Thursday evenings to coincide with the Night Market, Friday nights for after work drinks and small bites, and even live music nights. Little Black Bird café is also home to ‘Outfit’ catering, a business Lucinda has been growing for the past 4 years in Hawkes Bay.

The café is currently open for great coffee, breakfast and lunch - Monday to Friday 7.30 til 4pm and Saturday 8.00 til 2pm.
