Students to hold rally against fee increases
University of Auckland Students to hold rally against fee increases
Students will hold a rally against fee
increases today at 1pm outside the University of Auckland
library.
The rally comes in advance of a planned 4% fee hike by the University’s Council.
“We are going to protest on fee setting day because the university continues to chain us to debt by raising fees every year,” says Mikaela Hunt.
“Fees rise every year at a rate above inflation locking more and more people out and burdening graduates with crushing debt.”
“We have seen in the last few weeks Germany abolish student fees. We know it is possible here too.”
The key points to be raised at the rally are:
Recent job cuts at the university
The Vice-chancellor’s $660,000 salary
The Government’s underfunding of tertiary education
Proposed threats to student representation on university governing boards
That fully-funded fee-free education is possible
