Theft of Civil Defence equipment

Christchurch Police are investigating a burglary of equipment from a vacant store next to the Civil Defence facility in Sockburn. The break-in was reported to Christchurch Police just before 1pm yesterday (20 October 2014).

Police were advised that sometime between lunchtime on Thursday 16 October and lunchtime yesterday (Monday 20 October 2014) a large quantity of equipment including 20 generators (some of which were a distinctive red ‘Saint Meilan’ brand), several large aluminium ‘coffin’ style tool boxes and approximately 540 welfare blankets packed in 27 boxes were removed from the property without Christchurch City Council’s knowledge.

Police understand that some of the stolen items had been donated by overseas countries, local and national businesses following the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011.

One of the 20 generators taken is understood to have weighed approximately 300kg. Due to the size and volume of items taken it is thought that a truck may have been used to take the items away.

If you see any of these items for sale or have any information relating to this incident or saw any suspicious activity near the Civil Defence store in Sockburn please contact Christchurch Police on 03 363 7400.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
