Plan for Auckland marathon lane closures on Harbour Bridge

The two southbound box girder (clip-on) lanes on the Auckland Harbour Bridge will be closed this Sunday morning (2 November) for the annual Auckland marathon.

The southbound Shelley Beach Road and Fanshawe Street off-ramps – together with the Curran Street on-ramp for northbound drivers – will also be closed for the marathon.

The NZ Transport Agency says six lanes – three in each direction – will remain open on the harbour bridge.

The closures start at 4am and the Transport Agency plans to have all lanes on the bridge and the neighbouring ramps re-opened by 10.30am.

“The marathon’s timed to cause as little disruption as possible to drivers,” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Brett Gliddon. “Traffic using the harbour bridge early on a Sunday morning is light, and we will have all the lanes re-opened before it starts getting busier.”

Marathon athletes will also use a section of the Northern Busway as part of their course before joining the Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) and the harbour bridge near the Onewa Road interchange.

“Drivers heading down the Northern Motorway need to be aware that there will be some lane changes, and to take care as they approach the bridge,” Mr Gliddon says.

Some southbound lanes of the harbour bridge will be closed again on Sunday 16 November for the “Bike The Bridge” event.
