Clip-on Lanes Closed Over Holidays

Auckland Harbour Bridge Northbound Clip-on Lanes Closed Over Holidays

The two northbound clip-on lanes of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, as well as the Curran Street on-ramp and Stafford Road off-ramp will be closed over the Christmas-New Year holiday period for annual resurfacing work.

The closure will start at 7am Friday 26 December and carry through until 5.30am on Thursday 8 January.

The six other traffic lanes on the harbour bridge will remain open during this time – three in each direction.

The resurfacing work is part of the Agency’s ongoing maintenance programme that takes place every day of the year to ensure that the harbour bridge is kept in a first class and safe condition for Auckland’s communities.

The Agency’s Highway Manager for Auckland and Northland Brett Gliddon says that the work on the bridge is specifically designed to take place during the Christmas holiday period when traffic volumes are lighter than at other times of the year.

However, as there could still be delays crossing the bridge he is encouraging motorists to allow plenty of time for their journeys over the holidays.

Instead of using Curran Street, the Agency is asking motorists to choose either Fanshawe Street or Wellington Street to get onto the harbour bridge. Alternative routes such as SH16 and SH18 are also advisable for those travelling to destinations further north.

“This will help reduce any delays that might occur with so much activity happening on and around the bridge and we thank motorists in advance for their patience,” says Mr Gliddon.

When the lanes are closed, the existing surface will be removed, the deck plate cleaned under it and then a new surface laid using specially developed hard-wearing polyurethane material.

Wet weather or other unforeseen circumstances may postpone the work. If so the Transport Agency will immediately notify the travelling public.

Resurfacing the Auckland Harbour Bridge is part of the Summer Season Journeys campaign being delivered by the NZ Transport Agency. For more information about significant motorway closures between December 2014 and March 2015 please visit www.nzta.govt.nz/summerseason or call 09 969 9800.
