"Two Fatal Motorcycle crashes in the Waikato within four hours"

24th January 2015

Police and other emergency services have responded to two fatal motorcycle crashes in the Waikato within four hours on Friday evening the 23rd January 2015.

Waikato Police are disappointed to have two fatalities in the Auckland Anniversary weekend road toll, and wish to ensure that no further fatalities occur this weekend.

Senior Sergeant Gael Mockford from Hamilton Police said that the first fatal crash occurred in the Huntly area at approximately 6.30 pm where a 15 year old pillion passenger died.

The second fatality involved two motorcycles colliding on Koromatua Road in Temple View, which was reported to Police at about 10.20 pm on 23rd January 2015.

One male rider died at the scene and the second rider was taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.

“Waikato roads are extremely busy this weekend due to the Auckland Anniversary Holiday, and the numerous Events being held in both the Waikato and the Coromandel Areas.

Police urge extreme caution on our roads.

It is important that everyone reaches their destinations safely.

Police are continuing to investigate the causes of the two fatal crashes.

Early indications are that the crash in Temple View involved alcohol and a lack of safety helmets.

“Road safety should be at the forefront of every road user’s mind when driving.

Police encourage all drivers to drive defensively.

It is imperative that motorcyclists wear safety helmets.

Driving and alcohol consumption should never coincide.

Police would like to pass along our condolences to the families involved.
