Historic Truby King house for lease: great gardens and view

Wellington City Council is looking for a potential tenant to lease the historically significant Truby King House, which is located within the quiet surrounds of Truby King Park in Melrose, one of Wellington’s Botanic Gardens. Grab the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live, work, study and lease a Council heritage property right next to one of Wellington's Town Belt walkways.

Truby King was the founder of the Plunket Society and built the house in 1923. The area was acquired by Council in 1990 and includes the house, gardens and mausoleum. The house has heritage significance and it is an ideal opportunity for a business operation and some residential use, including but not limited to:

• Specialist healthcare

• Study and research area for medical, architectural and/or conservation students/professionals

• Bed and Breakfast/café

• Boutique Business

• High Commission or embassy

• Function Centre

Councillor Helene Ritchie, Environment Portfolio Leader, says, "the entire property lends itself to innovative use(s): scientist/artists-in-residence, diplomats, health/mental health, research or educational use, or just somewhere special to live and enjoy some unique aspects of our city's and country's natural and built heritage.”

Botanic Gardens Manger, David Sole, says this is a rare opportunity to be associated with a unique part of New Zealand’s heritage.

“The house provides amazing panoramic views of Wellington’s south coast, eastern harbour, Orongorongo Ranges and beyond. It’s five minutes’ drive from Wellington’s International Airport and about 10 minutes’ drive from Wellington’s CBD. It is also within a short walk of the bus route into the city.

“Finding a long term sustainable use of the house and the preservation of the surrounding gardens are of the upmost importance to us and the Truby King House and Garden Trust. If there are areas within the house that can be open to the public on a managed basis, then that is an added bonus.”

People interested in leasing Truby King House can contact David Sole, Botanic Gardens Manager, on 803 8296 or david.sole@wcc.govt.nz or view the Registration Of Interest (ROI) here for more information.
