Sing for MS – Wednesday 27 May

People living with multiple sclerosis, their families and friends will be pleased to know that this year, for the first time, Wellington is to be part of World MS Day on Wednesday 27 May.

A community singalong is to be held from 12.30 pm to 3 pm on Wednesday in the mezzanine community room of the Central Library. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The event is the brainchild of Christine O'Sullivan, who lives with MS herself, and has been organised in conjunction with Julian Raphael, from the Community Music Junction, and Wellington City Council.

The theme of World MS Day this year is "together we are stronger than MS,” says Christine. "And singing is one thing that makes me stronger." Christine adds that she hopes the event will give the MS community and others the opportunity to get together and have some fun. "We are also hoping to raise awareness of MS and the need for more volunteers. For example in September there is a street collection as part of National MS awareness week, and there is always a need for more collectors."

Wellington City Councillor Sarah Free, who holds the Council’s Community Facilities Portfolio, says the Council is pleased to be able to make the community room available for the occasion. "NZ has a high incidence of multiple sclerosis, so most Wellingtonians will know someone who has been diagnosed. My own mother was diagnosed in her thirties and is now in her eighties."

Councillor Free says everyone is welcome to come along and join in and the words will all be up on a screen. "We will be having some of the music therapy students from Victoria University joining us so it should be a great occasion and a lot of fun. Afternoon tea will be available, and if you can bring a plate that would be appreciated."
