Canterbury Police appeal for public’s help following burglaries in Cashmere

Canterbury Police are investigating two burglaries that were reported in less than an hour in the Cashmere area of Christchurch on 13 May 2015.

Police are keen to identify and speak to a man in his late teens (approx 17 years old), around 175cm tall with bright orange hair wearing a grey hoodie who was seen in the area last Tuesday as he may be able to provide them with information that can assist with this ongoing investigation.

The first burglary is reported to have occurred at around 10.30am with the second shortly before 11.15am.

Detective Sergeant Don Fisher said it would only take around a minute for someone to walk between the two properties which are only 100m apart. “The female occupant of the first property saw an unknown man walking down the drive. He is understood to have entered her property but left straight away through an open window in the laundry when he saw her. Finding someone in your property is very frightening and in this case the female was not injured and nothing was taken”

Less than 45 minutes later a second property was entered through a second floor window. “We believe that the person(s) would have needed to climb over the garage roof to gain access to the window. The house alarm was activated and we understand that the person(s) exited the property the same way they entered. Again nothing was taken” said Detective Fisher.

Canterbury Police are urge the public to be vigilant and check their home security as winter draws closer. If you’re in your house make sure you can secure any windows you are leaving ajar for ventilation. When working in the front or back garden, make sure the other side of your house is locked to prevent opportunistic crime. When you leave your property make sure you lock and secure doors and windows and set house alarms if you have them. Be a good neighbour and if you notice any suspicious activity report it straight away by calling 111.
