Matariki kite day coming to the summit of Mt Roskill

Matariki kite day coming to the summit of Mt Roskill - Pukewiwi

Puketāpapa Local Board brings Matariki celebrations to the top of Mt Roskill - Pukewiwi, with a spectacular kite day on Sunday 28 June.

The board’s events spokesperson, Ella Kumar encourages all central Aucklanders to bring their family and friends along to the free Puketāpapa Manu Aute Kite Day to experience kite flying, traditional Māori workshops for all ages, performances, local community groups, tasty kai and more.

“Our Matariki kite day is a highlight on our events calendar for our diverse communities. Kite days are celebrated in many various ways in different cultures, and with this event we will learn more about Māori culture, while enjoying and building on our community spirit", says Ella Kumar.

The event runs from 11am to 4pm, with features including:

• Workshops for all ages in the art of traditional flax weaving and kite making, courtesy of Nga Puawaitanga o Tāmaki

• Face painting from Rainbow Rascals

• Delicious mobile eateries including The Highwaymen and Fusion Flavas

• Traditional Māori sports courtesy of He Oranga Poutama

Walking up the mountain is encouraged (there will be no parking on the summit). A shuttle will operate for limited mobility visitors. The rain date is Sunday 5th July.
