Wave buoy back in water

Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s wave buoy was put back into the water last Thursday following a five-month absence.

The wave buoy was removed from the water earlier this year after Council identified a fault with the part that measures wave height, period and wave direction. It proved a challenge to fix and meant the buoy was out of action for longer than expected.

“The reasons for the significant delay were due to us trying to reproduce the fault that occurred when it was deployed on the water,” Council Data Services Manager Glenn Ellery says.

“It was very difficult to reproduce. Once we had finally identified it we had to wait for some parts to be delivered from the manufacturers in Canada. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

“Recent calm sea conditions have allowed us to redeploy the buoy,” he says.

The wave buoy, which sits 13km off Pukehina Beach, monitors and records information about wave heights, water temperature and wave frequency. It is popular with boaties and surfers in the region, and its data can be viewed live on Council’s website -www.boprc.govt.nz
